Budgies

Updated: May 26, 2021

Are you a first-time budgie owner and you just don’t know what to do? Well, I too have gotten budgies recently and if I hadn’t gathered up information, I would be lost too. But I did, and I’m here to share my data with you! Enjoy!

Food

Budgies should be fed seeds in their feeder, however, they should also eat veggies and greens regularly. Some of their favourite foods are cucumbers, lettuce, beetroots, tomatoes, rockets, celery, and pepper. Even though they should eat all these treats, they shouldn’t eat too much or else it could affect their blood and make them ill. I think the seed you should put in their feeder should be the one you get at the shops. But then again, it’s never bad to make sure that we’re right.

Toys

If you have just gotten the budgie, do not put the toys in as soon as it comes into its new home. They should be brought in slowly. Start small with things like a ladder or a small mirror. Then you can start with bigger stuff like chew toys and more perches. On the subject of perches, there should at least be two in a cage. Budgies are very active creatures and need space to play around. Another way to keep your budgie happy and active is to get him a friend! Budgies are very friendly animals and invite their own species to come and play. Buying two budgies would be best for a family who is all away on most days. If you do buy 2 budgies, make sure your cage is suitable for 2. Beware: if you buy 2 budgies it could be harder to train.

Breeding

A female budgie mainly lays 4-8 eggs in a clutch and 2-3 clutches per year, which could be a problem in space. One option is selling the babies ( And are just to be good, maybe send the budgie with a companion.) A good time to sell the babies is after 6-7 weeks if they are eating well alone and flying well. Sometimes, if the parents aren’t old and mature enough they start attacking and bullying the babies. It could also happen if you stress them by moving the cage around too much. If this happens, watch this video.

You must make sure that the budgie lays its eggs in a nesting box but it is ok if it lays its eggs on the floor. You will know if the budgie wants to lay an egg if she starts to tear up the newspaper at the bottom of the cage to make a nest. She will also sit in the bottom of the cage for periods of time instead of sitting on the perches like she normally does. Also remember that you must always close the cage door and the doors in the room. Also, remember that only at 12-18 months is a budgie ready to parent.

Breeding season

Budgies may breed from the month of October through to March. They could also breed when it’s been heavily raining. Of course, the breeding only happens when there is a boy and a girl.

Taking care of a baby budgie:

Sometimes, the adult budgie isn’t old enough to know how to take care of its child. This is when you need to know how to do it yourself. Here is how you do it. So technically you can either use a spoon or a syringe, however, a spoon would be the best option because when you use the syringe, there is a lot of waste and also the baby can’t eat properly. Also, there is a bird feed formula that is made for babies. It is just the right consistency and it is not going to choke the baby because it’s liquid. A baby budgie starts eating by itself when it’s 6 weeks old, but if it is being hand-fed it might eat the baby food for a bit longer. I think 8 weeks of hand feeding would be safe. When you are hand feeding the baby, you can tell when it’s not hungry when it ignores the food.

Boy or girl?

You will know if your baby budgie is a boy or girl after a few weeks. All you have to do is look at their cere ( their nostrils and nose area ). A male will have a blue cere while a female has a brown one. When it’s breeding season, the girl’s cere gets bigger while the boy’s one turns a darker shade of blue. Easy!

Sicknesses:

You will know if your budgie is sick if it produces...

  • Watery droppings.

  • Fluffed up feathers.

  • Lack of energy/sleeping more than usual.

  • Loss of appetite.

  • Drinking much more or less than normal.

  • Unusual swellings.

  • Loss of feathers.

  • Limping or holding one leg up.

  • Unusual bleeding

  • Watery eyes or nostrils

  • Overgrown beak

If either of these happens to your bird, do the following. Give all medications as directed, keep your pet bird warm, do not change your bird's sleep cycle, make sure your bird eats and drinks, avoid stress, separate sick birds, notify your personal physician if you become ill, notify your veterinarian if your budgie’s condition worsens.

Vomit

If your budgie starts to vomit don’t stress. It could either be vomit or your budgie could be regurgitating. Go to this link to find out more.

So, as it said, your bird would be regurgitating on purpose because when it was a baby its mother and father fed it in a way that they spit the food in their mouths out to give to the baby. They don’t want to stop when they are older, so for some time, it spits its own food out on purpose. You can tell if it’s regurgitating if it jerks its head up and down to get the food out.

Vomit, however, is a totally different case in which, as soon as you see you should have a check-up for your bird. It would be caused if your bird has something stuck in its crop which is kind of like the budgies storage room. Food doesn't digest there. Note that the crop isn’t a part of the budgie’s tummy. After some time it is sent to another part of the budgie’s body where the food is broken down. But back to the vomit situation. If you suspect that your budgie is vomiting, examine it and see that if after it vomits its poop looks ok, it can drink and eat after it's vomited and they are not listless and puffy, just give the budgie some Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and it should be okay. If they are doing these things, immediately go to a vet and sort it out.

Taming

Did you know that you can teach your budgie to say certain words! Crazy right. By watching TV birds can slowly learn how to talk! You can also tame your baby to sit on you for they won't do it at first. It may be hard to tame your budgie. One way to gain your budgie’s trust is to give it a millet ( a rod kind of thing of seed) and let it eat from your hand.

Nesting Boxes

There is no need to place anything in your nesting box however I don’t see anything wrong in decorating it! I think budgies will like red and green the most and maybe some blue. If you want to draw a picture, the best option is roses.

Night-time

Hey, no need to stress! You don’t need to go to your local pet store and ramage for a bird bed. What I mean is something else. As much as birds do perch themselves and sleep on their own, you still need to do some things. You should cover the cage with a cloth such as a bedsheet. This is to make the budgie feel secure and safe. Remember, once you’ve started this you shouldn’t stop because if you do, the budgies will stress about where their usual protection has gone.

Number 1s and 2s:

A budgie poops every 12-15 minutes and it is important to make sure they have a clean cage. Luckily they have small poops which makes it easier to clean. Unfortunately, they cannot be potty trained as I mentioned before.

Likes & hates

Budgies love the noises of humans, vacuum cleaners which could cause them to start singing and they also seem very interested in toilet flushes! They also might like you! However, they hate the sounds of slammed doors, sirens, shouting, or smoke alarms. Budgies hate the smell of Essential Oils, Garlic, Cayenne Pepper and Professional Products.

Important: Red : Best if you know: Orange : Just for fun: Yellow

Notes: Bird cage must be placed inside, make sure not to leave your alone bird for more than 2 days, place the bird cage in a place that is next to all the activity you make but make sure it is not in the center of the activity, placing the budgie in a place where there are scented smokes and toxic smells is very dangerous for the bird, it is very cruel to only get one budgie for they will need someone to play with, remember to ask a veterinarian how often the budgie needs to be vaccinated, it is not a good idea to put your cage in a kitchen or a bedroom, the living room would be a good option, Your closest Sheetmetal factories can make the custom made cages to your preference. Contact companies like AstonPrecision to have a chat.

budgies like TV for they would be able to learn how to say some things, budgies are noisy, they love company, they eat more than seed, they can be trained to talk, they can live up to 20 years, they bite, they can be trained to rest on your hand, they are not expensive to keep, they cannot be toilet trained, they can get bored easily and to avoid this get them a companion and get them lots of toys, they like their toys being changed frequently, do not feed it to much fruit or vegetables or it could affect their blood.

Life spawn: 5-10 years

Frequency of sound: 60 dB, 77 Hz to 7.6 kHz

I hope that’s given you enough information that you need to know for now. I’ve tried my hardest to put down information and solutions for every scenario. I’ve had my budgies for a couple of weeks now and they're still scared around us. But I know we just need to wait and soon they’ll love us more than anything. I have to remind you that budgies are delicate creatures and you should be very cautious around them. But that’s all for now. Bye-bye, or as a bird would say it. Chirp chirp tweet!

P.S. That’s not real bird language.
